Audio Amplifiers

Audio Amplifier Information & Advice

Audio amplifiers are an important piece of any audio system setup, increasing signal power to produce superior sound at the desired volume and power level with minimal distortion Amplifiers are widely used for many events and environments, including concerts, rallies, public events and at home with home stereo systems.

Choosing the Right Amplifier for your Application

Before you decide which amplifier to buy, it is important to understand the different aspects that each type and class of amplifier deliver, and which may be best for your desired use or environment.

Different Types of Amplifier

We stock a range of different types of amplifiers; these include:

  • 100 Volt Line Amplifiers – used in wide areas such as stadiums or large buildings with the ability to connect large numbers of speakers.
  • In Wall Amplifiers – compact Bluetooth amplifiers, used in walls or ceilings to connect to low impedance speakers.
  • Hearing Aid Loop Amplifiers – used in public spaces like theatres or churches to help those with hearing problems to hear sounds clearly.
  • Multimedia and HiFi Amplifiers – PA amps often used for delivering background music or voice overs at functions, conferences or other events.
  • Power Amplifiers - critical in delivering high-performance audio for any location requiring a professional PA amp system.

Amplifier Power Ratings

Audio amplifier power ratings can be very misleading. Peak power or music power outputs are not good guides to amplifier performance, it is more important to pay attention to the specifications and look for the R.M.S output of the individual amp. The power output of amplifiers will often differ dependent upon on the loudspeaker load.
Most modern amplifiers will happily work into 4 or 8 Ohm loads (many larger types are sufficient for 2 Ohms also).

Getting The Best From Your Audio Amplifier

Terralec Top Tips

  • To achieve the best results from your amplifier always match the amp power to the loudspeaker system.
  • For quality sound and efficiency use high quality connecting cables between your amplifier and speakers and keep the speakers as close to the amp as possible.
  • For input connections i.e connecting your audio amplifier to your mixer, use screened cables. These reduce interference and improve sound quality.

We offer a great range of cables and leads for such set ups; please visit our Cables & Connectors range for more information.

It is important that all audio amplifiers are installed in an area that is well ventilated, especially if they are rack mounted or in any kind of housing. A fan can often be fitted to assist with cooling in these circumstances.
